Market research company IC Insights recently released an update for its 2016 McClean Report forecast report. Of the 33 major IC product categories counted in the report, 14 product categories will grow more than 2% this year, especially for mobile applications. The growth rate of processor MPU and signal conversion IC ranks first.
IC Insights' 2016 McClean Report predicts the growth of 33 major IC product categories before 2020. As shown in Figure 1, the 33 major IC product categories are ranked according to the updated 2016 growth rate. IC Insights predicts that there will be 14 product categories with growth rates of more than 2% this year-the overall IC market growth rate in 2016. Among them, the growth rate of mobile application processors and signal conversion (analog) components is the highest. 10% growth. In addition, there are five products that are expected to continue to grow at a rate of 2% as the overall IC market. It is expected that the number of IC product categories that will grow in 2016 will increase to 20, more than 9 in 2015.
The mobile phone application MPU is expected to grow by 10%, ranking fifth in the rankings for the fifth year. Although the growth rate of the mobile phone application MPU market has cooled slightly in recent years, since smartphone shipments are still an attractive terminal application in the IC market, IC Insights predicts that MPU will still grow steadily by 10% this year. Benefiting from the construction of a wide range of fields such as consumer, communications and computing devices, and other systems, signal conversion ICs are also expected to grow by 10% in 2016.
The 32-bit MCU market will grow significantly by 8% under the catalysis of "smart cars." Driving information systems and more and more semi-autonomous vehicle functions, such as automatic parking, advanced cruise control, and collision prevention, must rely on 32-bit MCUs. It is expected that in the next few years, advanced 32-bit MCUs will occupy more than 25% of the processing power in automobiles.
Other notable categories include the previously optimistic MPU market for tablets. After the enthusiasm of users for tablets has faded, it is expected to grow only 2% this year. It seems that DRAM will fall sharply this year, falling to the second largest share of IC product categories (following the standard PC and server MPU markets). Following the substantial growth of the DRAM market in 2013 and 2014, as the demand for desktop and notebook computers weakened, forcing suppliers to reduce the average selling price (ASP) for sales, which led to a 3% decline in 2015. It is expected to fall again by 8% this year. Global DRAM ASP fell by 4% in 2015 and is expected to continue to fall by 11% in 2016.
